Creating A 5-Year Plan from Scratch

March 18, 2020

Creating a 5-year plan is an essential tool for long-term success. It gives you focus by defining your goals and building a material plan to help you achieve them. While the planning can be meticulous, it is necessary for focusing your efforts on your ultimate objectives. In this article, we’ll discuss how to design a 5-year plan so you can achieve your long term goals.

Step 1: Imagine

Start by taking a close look at your life and values. Create a vision in your head of what you want your life to look like in 5 years.
  • Am I debt-free?
  • Do I own a house?
  • Where will I live?
  • Am I in school?
  • How do I spend my time?
  • What will my hobbies be?
  • Who do I spend my time with?
  • Where will my income come from?
Answering these questions will help you figure out what’s important to you and where you want to be. Defining your highest aspirations and discovering your motivations will help the rest of the plan fall into place. Now, you have some personal clarity and a long-term vision to set into action.

Step 2: Write

Of course, dreams without a plan are just wishes; reams with a plan are goals, which you can accomplish. Establish all the goals you want to achieve in the next 5 years and physically write them out with deadlines. The goals should be S.M.A.R.T. (specific, measurable, actionable, reasonable, and timely). For example, “sell my house within the year” or “reduce my debt by 25%” of “look for a new job.” Once the goals are written out, they’re easier to manage, execute, and understand. Keep your outlined plan somewhere you can see it and look at it daily to stay motivated.

Step 3: Do and Review

Take action towards your goals by breaking them down into smaller, manageable goals and tasks. Outline strategies, the steps you’ll take to meet your short-term goals. For example, if you want a new job your strategies might be: attending a networking event once a month, updating your resume, and taking a class on leadership. Review your progress by writing updates on each of your goals or keeping an excel sheet of your progress so you stay focused, motivated, and encouraged.  You may be excited, terrified, or overwhelmed by your goals, but you have a plan. With a 5-year plan, you can move towards your goals efficiently. Of course, your plan will change as you change, but it will give you stability and focus.
